Advocator
Proclamation from the City of Austin declaring March 2020 as National Nutrition Month
Considering how the social determinants of health contribute to diet-related diseases, Matthew’s aim is to empower individuals and communities to make better choices within eating environments and food systems that are often rife with barriers and challenges to healthy eating. In addition to his research work, Matthew is a passionate advocator for policies that address nutrition-related health inequalities. His focus on advocacy continues into the community where he volunteers with local civic leaders to explore policies that provide equitable access and availability to nutritious foods.
Leader in Nutrition Policy
Strong nutrition policy at the local, state, and federal level is essential to help achieve a healthy, profitable, equitable and sustainable food system that benefits everyone. Matthew has been appointed to serve as a committee member of the American Society for Nutrition Committee on Advocacy and Policy, Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior Advisory Committee on Public Policy and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Legislative and Public Policy Committee.
Advocacy on Capital Hill
Matthew has advocated for the role of Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) in the prevention and treatment of malnutrition, obesity, diabetes, and other chronic diseases. He has met with and encouraged members of Congress to support policies that better align with the goals of treatment and prevention including the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act and Preventing Diabetes in Medicare Act.
